New project orientation: IMS Client for Windows Mobile, using C and C#

This morning, Tuesday 2nd of October, we had a meeting with the ICRC Staff (Prof. Al-Begain, Mr. Kuwadekar & Ms. Balakrishna) regarding the project’s future. A document has been prepared for them reporting the possible alternatives for our IMS client.

According to all participants, the solution using the PJSIP library under Windows Mobile has been adopted. PJSIP is a SIP/RTP stack library entirely written in “C” making it usable either on Windows Mobile or Symbian OS. Windows Mobile has been chosen instead of Symbian because of voice related problems. Moreover, Windows Mobile allows to use the CF.NET (Compact Framework.NET) allowing us to use the C# development language, making the GUI design and implementation faster than the obscure Symbian C++ language.

Below the document reporting the possible alternatives we proposed to the ICRC staff :

Summary of the last few days

Last Thursday and Friday were 2 intense discussions/tests days involving all the IMS staff from the University (Prof. Khalid Al-Begain, Alhad and Chitra), Prof. Wagen, and us off course. Below is a summary of the key points we rose:

  • The RTP Stack for Symbian OS, even if shortly documented in the SDK Help, lacks informations, and no practical examples were found, making it hard to use.
  • Target device is not limited to Symbian OS. Windows mobile may be considered.
  • Based on the two previous points, we’re studying all possibilities and summarize them in a document that will be discussed between Prof. Khalid, Alhad and us.
  • Once a solution has been choosed, we will work on its specifications and begin its development.
